Meet Museum Female Scientists and Learn About Their Work

The New York State Museum will present Women of Science at the NYS Museum on Saturday, February 10, 2018 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This free event is planned in recognition of the U.N. International Day of Women and Girls in Science and invites visitors of all ages to meet Museum Scientists and learn more about their disciplines, current research projects and museum collections. 

This family-friendly event features 14 female scientists representing a variety of sciences throughout the New York State Museum’s Division of Research and Collection departments. Participating scientists include Dr. Daria Merwin, Kristin O’Connell, Dr. Christina Reith, and Jessica Vavresek, from Archaeology; Lisa Anderson and Julie Weatherwax from Bioarchaeology; Naima Starkloff from Ornithology, Diana Hurlbut from Botany; Dr. Gwendolyn Saul from Cultural Anthropology; Dr. Denise Mayer from Freshwater Ecology; Kathleen Bonk from Geology; Susan Winchell-Sweeney of Geographic Information Systems; Dr. Lisa Amati of Invertebrate Paleontology; and Jessica Watson of Zooarchaeology.

The day’s schedule features hands-on educational activities, tabling activities by participating scientists, brief science talks, and several “Ask a Scientist” panels for families with younger children, teens and adults.   • 10 a.m. Opening Remarks by Kathryn Weller, Director of Education at the NYS Museum. Huxley Theater. 
  • 10:30–11 a.m. “Ask a Scientist” Panel for families with children younger than 12 years. Kids Cove. 
  • 11 a.m.–2:00 p.m. Activities with scientists throughout Adirondack Hall, Bird Hall, and Native Peoples Hall.
  • 2:30–3:30 p.m. “Ask a Scientist” panel for adults and teens. Huxley Theater.
  • Brief science talks in Huxley Theater throughout the day.

The State Museum is a program of the New York State Education Department’s Office of Cultural Education. Located at 222 Madison Avenue in Albany, the Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It is closed on the Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day.
