Abstract | In the quarter century before the opening of the Erie Canal, a private canal company improved Mohawk River-navigation by constructing rock wing dams on numerous rifts. The dams were patterned after eel weirs built previously by Native American inhabitants and others. One complex of such navigation dams, recorded in 1803, approximates in design and function a true canal lock. |
